The church bells began ringing at 6am to call people to worship. We declined! This is clearly a very religious part of the world. Crucifixes abound, on walls, in little shrines in back gardens, bedroom walls and of course churches - even the Evangelisches church in Ordlingen had a large crucifix at the front. It is, of course the site for the Oberammergau Passion Play, performed every 10 years as a result of a vow made by the inhabitants in 1642 that they would do this if God spared them from the Bubonic plague.
Today we travelled along the Romantic Road from Unterammergau to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, passing through countless beautiful little (and not so little) towns full of beautifully kept and presented houses and public buildings.
two things that impressed me were that the clocks in Church Towers were all set to the correct time and that so many buildings had solar panels covering the roof. I guess the government here cares about climate change!
The main towns we passed though were Landsberg, (where Hitler wrote Mien Kampf from a prison cell), Nordlingen (over 1100 years old) and Rothenburg ob der Tauber (with the inner city walls dating back to the 1200s). Both Nordlingen and Rothenburg still have intact city walls. We walked along the walls in Rothenburg aobut half way around the old city.
