We're now in Vienna, the home of Amadeus Mozart, Herbert von Karajan, Johann & Richard Strauss, Sigmund Freud & Gustav Klimt. The architecture in the centre of the city is similar to that of Prague: lots of Baroque buildings with plaster and painted decorations, the amazing Gothic Cathedral of St Stephan, plus Art Deco and Art Nouveau buildings as well.

St Stephan Cathedral is awe inspiring from the outside with its extremely tall spire (136m) and beautifully patterned tile roof - including the coat of arms of the Habsburg empire, the city of Vienna and the Republic of Austria, The interior is grand in a Gothic style - very high ceiling to reflect the majesty of God - but the stained galss windows are very disappointing after seeing those in the Prague Castle Cathedral. We sat in on part of a church service - all in German of course. It didn't seem much different from what you might experience at St Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne.

One of the great problems in coming to somewhere like Vienna is having to choose what to have with your morning coffee - 15 or 20 types of torte, lots of different pastries, or just a chocolate truffle or two - and you can only, in all conscience, choose one! Which we did and they were delicious.

A small collection of cakes for us to choose from
