Oberammergau is well known for its Passion Play performed once a decade since 1634 (now on the first year of each decade). We're staying in Unterammergau just up the road in a B&B set in the beautiful Bavarian Alps. We can't get over how green it is and how imposing the mountains are all around us. Some are covered in firs and pines while others are mostly rock with areas of scree from avalanches or glaciers.
Oberammergau is a town of some 2000 people with beautifully decorated houses in the Bavarian style of wide houses with verandahs, usually decorated at this time of year with colourful flower boxes. Apparently any new house built in the town has to have a fresco painted on the front which adds to the colourful nature of the town.

We drove to Fussen, about 40km away, the town next to Neuschwanstein Castle. Unfortunately it started to rain just before we got there. That plus the mile long queue and the even longer walk to the top of the mountain were enough to pursuade us we didn't really need to see the inside of another castle. We did see the fairy tale outside though with its round towers and pointed roofs

Hi Chris, I am interested in using some of your pics on the front cover of Essentials. OK with you? If I needed it could you send me the original of nominated pics?
