June 5 Bamberg

Bamberg is a small town at the Main River end of the Danube-Main Canal. It was one of the few towns that wasn’t extensively damaged in WW2. It hosts a world renowned Orchestra though apparently few of the members are actually from Bamberg.

The river that runs though the town is the Regnitz and these house were originally owned by fishermen who could tie up their boats under the house. The lower levels have now been closed in and gardens planted.

This was originally the abattoir but the pollution from it into the river led to the council moving it elsewhere so this is now a library for the university.
One thing Bamberg is famous for is its smoky beer, Schlenkerla. We didn’t try it but others did, with varying degrees of appreciation.

The cathedral sits at the top of one of the seven hills, next to the one time palace of the emperor.

Inside the cathedral is a statue, The Bamburg Horseman but no one is sure who the rider might be, but possibly Henry II who is buried there along with the only Pope not buried at the Vatican.

The gate into the Old Court used by Henry II in the 11th century as a residence then later rebuilt to become the Bishops residence

The Old Residence was built in the 15th century and the new residence and rose garden were built in the 19th century.
