June 7 Wertheim

Another mediaeval town that was spared from the bombing in WWII. The town fortress is on top of the hill overlooking the town and the town is surrounded by a wall, some of which has been incorporated into homes. Like other towns we’ve visited the town has flooded regularly and high water marks can be found on buildings with the dates of the floods, going as far back as 1595.

Dwarfs feature throughout  the town, apparently from a connection with the Snow White Fairy tale. The tower was originally accessed by a ladder or ropes and held prisoners but now has a spiral staircase and can be hired for events and small parties.

Buildings were built with upper floors wider than those below either to allow space at ground level for carts, or to reduce taxes which were based on land area.

Collegiate Church, so named because after a period of battle it was agreed that the church would be run by both Catholics and Lutherans. In the end the Lutherans won out as indicated by the statue of Martin Luther at the side of the church.
The Tauber river which flows into the Main
After walking through the town we were taken across the Main River to a winery where we tasted three wines, a Spritz , which is a low alcohol aerated wine, often drunk at breakfast, a local white wine, Wertheimer, and a very good Pinot. We also had a demonstration of Pretzel making with samples to try.
